MEMORIALS & MEMORIAL PLAQUES

This page aims to serves as a focus for the memory or commemoration of a key point of history of the Royal Observer Corps. Over the years there has been a number of memorials, plaques and displays that have been erected to remember people, places and areas significant to the heritage of the Corps.

The list below is a small sample but hopes to be expanded over the coming months as more and more sites are incorporated.

​LOCATION: 
Newport Cemetery is very large.  Enter from one of the access roads off Newport Road.  Find the War Graves section which is in the middle of the cemetery.  Kelway’s grave is near the south west corner of the War Graves area.
DATE OF BLESSING: 11 October 2017

​Grave of one of the few observers killed by enemy action whilst going on duty at nearby Hackthorn ROC Post in WW2. 
 ​

​The new grave is a large black polished stone tablet with a photo of Kelway and the badges of the ROC and the Special Constabulary thereon.  There is significant text in white letters.

National Royal Observer Corps Memorial Stone.  ​

​Large grey granite stone memorial.  Remembers all who served in the Royal Observer Corps from 1925 – 1995 including Seaborne Observers.​​

​LOCATION: On the south side of the A327, 19m south east of ‘Observer Bridge’.  Note the bridge is pedestrian and bridleway only.
DATE OF ERECTION: 09 October 2020

​​Royal Observer Corps Post Memorial Stone.   

The memorial is in slate 0.80m by 1.16m set in a large sandstone ‘boulder’ 1.36m by 1.66m and 0.30m thick.  The memorial includes the ROC badge. The wording remembers all who served on the Arborfield Post and the ROC.  This is the best of the relatively rare post memorials.
